If you’ve spent time around Charleston’s live music scene, you likely know Brad and Jennifer Moranz best for their massive, sprawling Charleston Christmas Special. But on Saturday night, my crew of 10 headed out for the 7:00 PM showing of their summer production, Blast from the Past—and it proved that a tighter, more intimate cast can pack just as much punch.

Equal parts jukebox musical, wacky stage play, and variety show, Blast from the Past takes a delightfully ridiculous premise—a freak meteor storm hitting a vintage vinyl shop, causing music icons to spring to life—and turns it into a high-octane trip through the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s.

Here is my take on how the night went down.

The Vibe: Pure, Unfiltered Fun

Walking into the venue, as expected, the crowd leaned primarily over 50, but the collective energy in the room felt decades younger. From the overture to the final bow, everyone around us seemed to be having an absolute blast.

What makes the Moranz productions so enduring isn't just the nostalgia; it's the fact that nobody on stage takes themselves too seriously. The performance struck a fantastic balance between genuinely soulful, serious musical numbers and intentionally goofy, spoof-like bits that had our entire group laughing out loud. It’s lighthearted, self-aware, and completely unpretentious.

The Talent: Small Cast, Massive Voices

While the cast size is noticeably smaller than their giant holiday lineup, the vocal talent on display was phenomenal. Every singer brought absolute heat to the classic repertoire, backed by a live band that was remarkably tight from start to finish.

A few standouts that made the night for us:

• Brad Moranz as Willie Nelson: This was an absolute peak highlight of the evening. Brad’s take on Willie was brilliant, spot-on, and played to perfection.
• The Final Elvis Impersonator: Ending the night with Elvis is a bold move, but this performance nailed it. It was equal parts fantastic homage and hilarious showmanship, capturing the King's charm without losing the show's playful spirit.
• Lighting & Atmosphere: The production value was top-tier. The dynamic lighting design pulled you right into the era of each song.

If I had one tiny critique from a technical standpoint, there were a few moments where singers entered from the wings singing, but their body mics weren't turned hot for the first second or two. However, the performers handled it like seasoned pros, never breaking character, and the sound team quickly caught up.

The Verdict

It’s easy for musical revues to feel like cash-in nostalgia trips, but the heart, humor, and raw talent Brad and Jennifer bring to the stage make Blast from the Past feel like a genuine celebration of an incredible era of music.

Our group of 10 walked out smiling, reminiscing about the music of the '50s, '60s, and '70s, and humming classic tunes all the way to the car - and during the long wait to exit the parking garage. If you get the chance to catch it the next time it rolls into town, grab a group of friends and go!
