Life on the Road with Layla Jewel Parton: The 10-Year-Old Star Stealing Scenes in ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’
Life on the Road with Layla Jewel Parton: The 10-Year-Old Star Stealing Scenes in ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’

When the national tour of Mrs. Doubtfire landed at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center, audiences were treated to high-energy comedic timing, quick changes, and unforgettable musical numbers. Central to the show’s heart and humor is 10-year-old Layla Jewel Parton, who lights up the stage as Natalie Hillard—the youngest sibling whose candid, unfiltered reactions deliver some of the biggest laughs of the night. Between packed show schedules, tutoring, and exploring the Lowcountry, Layla caught up with Charleston Live Music to share what it’s really like booking a major national tour, keeping a straight face on stage alongside co-star Hudson Vandervoort (Christopher), and spotting dolphins in Charleston harbor.

New Single: Michael Martin Band Serves Up Raw Bluegrass-Rock on “When Karma Comes Around”

Charleston’s own Michael Martin Band—a recurring Country / Americana Band of the Year winner—is back with a brand-new single that feels less like a polished studio production and more like a rowdy, front-porch picking party. The new track, “When Karma Comes Around,” is available now across all major streaming platforms, delivering a dusty mid-tempo groove anchored by Martin’s gravel-and-grits vocals and a driving double-banjo arrangement. The moment those banjos kick in, you’ll be smiling through the whole track—it is just that much fun. Hearing that unpolished, authentic grit instantly took me back to my teenage years spent sitting on a blanket at bluegrass festivals in Virginia, soaking in the music while real musicians jammed out in the open air. It doesn’t try to smooth over its edges, capturing the exact kind of raw, infectious energy that makes the Lowcountry sound so special.
