This album asks the musical question, “What if a funk-leaning jazz fusion group teamed up with a heavy-as-hell progressive band, then some Latin percussionists heard it and joined in with wicked polyrhythms?” Does that question make any sense? No, of course not. The music sure does, though. None of this should work, but the way that the tight-but-loose rhythm section coalesces around the complex riffs while the percussion bounces along in the background ends up being irresistible. Highlights include the twisting, trumpet spiked “The Meetup,” the lurching stomper “Song for Rog,” and, oh yeah, a cover of Hootie & the Blowfish’s “I Go Blind” that hilariously turns it into a numb emo ballad. Once you understand the style, it does get a bit repetitive, but throwing Hootie in towards the end helped a lot.
