Now celebrating six decades of touring and recording, Three Dog Night holds one of the most remarkable chart records in popular music. Between 1969 and 1975, the group delivered an astonishing 21 consecutive Billboard Top 40 hits, including 3 Billboard #1 singles ("Joy to the World," "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)," and "Black and White") and 12 straight RIAA-certified Gold albums.
A Unique Sound Built on Harmonies and Songwriting Genius
Formed in 1968 by founder Danny Hutton, Three Dog Night changed the paradigm of late-60s rock. Conceived around three powerhouse lead vocalists backed by a tight four-piece band, the group eschewed the traditional single-frontman dynamic in favor of rich, soaring three-part harmonies and shared lead vocals.
Rather than relying solely on internal songwriting, Hutton and the band possessed an uncanny ear for discovering untapped talent. Three Dog Night introduced mainstream American audiences to legendary, then-unknown songwriters, launching iconic tracks by:
