Macelyn Batten Delivers a Raw, Unforgettable Performance at The Windjammer

Opening a high-energy beach show on a warm Lowcountry evening isn't always an easy assignment, but on Sunday, September 27, Macelyn Batten held the crowd at The Windjammer’s NÜTRL Beach Stage in the palm of her hand. Serving as opening support for the final stop of the SUSTO Stringband tour, Batten delivered a captivating performance built on raw emotional storytelling, authentic lyrics, and a deeply relatable connection with her audience.

Opening support at a high-energy beach show isn't always easy, but on Sunday, September 27, Macelyn Batten held the NÜTRL Beach Stage crowd in the palm of her hand. Closing out the final stop of the SUSTO Stringband tour at The Windjammer, Batten offered a beautiful example of emotional storytelling—captivating the audience with a set of original music that felt completely authentic, real, and deeply relatable.

Accompanied by a multi-instrumentalist swapping seamlessly between harmonica, guitar, mandolin, and banjo, Batten’s tender vocal delivery was matched only by the depth of her personal narrative.

Acknowledging that September is Suicide Prevention Month, Batten shared the deeply personal story behind her newest single, "Something to Hold Onto" (released Sept 23)—currently her only original track available on streaming platforms. Speaking through tears about the tragic loss of her ex-husband to suicide a few months after their divorce, she offered a profound reflection to the audience: the end of a relationship doesn't erase the love that existed inside of it, nor does it make the loss hurt any less. It was a heart-wrenching, beautiful moment that deeply moved everyone listening.

Her set continued to showcase her natural storytelling ability, from sharing her songwriting process during a spiritual getaway to introducing "The Table," a song dedicated to her Southern belle grandmother. Singing the lyric, "I got that old table," struck a deeply personal chord—a sentiment shared by anyone who still gathers around a cherished family heirloom.

Interspersed among her compelling original material were two soul-stirring covers: a spirited nod to Dolly Parton with "Jolene" and a moving rendition of John Prine's classic "Angel From Montgomery." The members of SUSTO joined Batten on stage during her performance, bringing the crowd to a roar and setting the stage for an unforgettable headlining set.
